AMD's Zen 7 and Medusa Chips: Unveiling the Next-Gen CPU Roadmap (2025)

AMD's Next-Gen CPU Roadmap: From Zen 7 to Medusa

AMD's recent analyst day showcased its ambitious plans for the future of its CPUs, with a focus on servers and enterprise AI. But there's more to the story than meets the eye.

The company's roadmap hints at a new Zen 6 and an efficiency-focused Zen 6c, both set to feature an industry-first 2-nanometer manufacturing process, likely from TSMC. This is a significant advancement, as it will enable higher performance and efficiency in AMD's processors.

But the real intrigue lies in Zen 7. AMD's CTO, Mark Papermaster, hinted at a mysterious new 'matrix engine' and a next-generation manufacturing node, possibly TSMC's A16. The launch date for Zen 7 remains unclear, but it's expected to be sometime after 2026.

However, AMD's General Manager of Computing and Graphics Group, Jack Huynh, revealed a roadmap for laptop processors. The company is set to launch a 'Gorgon' chip in 2026 and a 'Medusa' chip in 2027, with a major focus on accelerating AI-workload performance. Interestingly, leaks suggest that Gorgon will use a Zen 5 CPU architecture, not Zen 6.

AMD's ambitious goals include a 3x+ boost in PC and gaming-related revenue through 2030, which could significantly impact the market share of long-time rival Intel. Intel, however, is not resting on its laurels, with its own next-generation chips, including the Nova Lake CPU for desktop, set to launch next year.

The battle for the future of AI PCs is on, and AMD is poised to make a significant impact. But with Intel's strong position and the rapid evolution of technology, the question remains: who will emerge as the ultimate winner in this high-stakes game?
